The episode opens with a message from Mayor Grisham about Tim Jensen’s disappearance. Ben does not sound particularly happy to be on air again, but Sammy is very adamant that Ben is his co-host. They discuss their two interviews for the night—Emily Potter regarding the reopening of the library and Dr. Raoul the chiropractor. Ben did not like the town’s previous head librarian, Mrs. Lily Kilpatrick (first name source: King Falls Gazette), who “got her scholarship in war-torn Nazi Germany” and supposedly put the Mein Kampf in the children’s section. |

Ben is struck dumb by his first meeting with Emily Potter, who he flirts with for the rest of her interview. She says she’d been listening in every night. The library was an older building that had been closed for renovation. Ben, wanting to impress Emily, shows off his historical knowledge by reciting facts about the library: “Built by François Swindle, 1912, the largest brick and mortar structure in King Falls until 1918 when City Hall was built” (4:09). The top floor of the building had apparently been set on fire by an unknown perpetrator and Mrs. Kilpatrick had gone missing. This prompts a surprised Sammy to ask “How many people are missing in this town?” Leading up the fire, Mrs. Kilpatrick claimed to be having visions of President Abraham Lincoln checkout desk every night for a week being watched by John Wilkes Booth. They speculate that maybe Mrs. Kilpatrick, who lived in an apartment inside the library, might’ve started the fire herself out of annoyance over the noise the apparitions were supposedly causing. |
They open the phone lines and a series of quick conversations begin. A man who refuses to give his name—later identified as Greg Frickard—asks Emily about overdue charges and if she was seeing anyone before being quickly hung up on by Ben. Next is Cynthia, who insults both the library and Emily. This is followed by an unidentified male who says, somewhat adoringly: “I don’t listen to the station, really. I listen to you.” An elderly woman who Emily tentatively identified as Mrs. Kilpatrick who insists that she saw President Lincoln. They end with Greg once more, who asks about how a hypothetical friend might go about courting Emily. |
