The episode opens with a commercial for Reverend Xavier “Get Right With God” Hawthorne. It’s followed by a perturbed Ben Arnold who is irritated with Sammy about his booking of HFB3 on the show. Sammy claims that he took initiative and was doing research to get a better grasp on the history and supernatural phenomena of the town when he stumbled on HFB3’s ebook: King of King Falls. Ben insists that the man is a whackjob, which is when HFB3, who is actually sitting in the studio, speaks up. HFB3 ignores Ben and addresses Sammy directly, referring to Ben as Sammy’s man, a manservant, and a child. Both Sammy and Ben take offense. He says that his family settled King Falls “many, many moons ago, so its lineage is pure and unfiltered through my veins; my family has witnessed it all, and of course, that has been passed to me, and now through my memoir, passed to you” (3:45). He also says that “we know every minute detail of its’ ‘hellish existence’” (4:27), especially regarding extraordinary happenings. They decide to take callers, who HFB3 calls “the lowlies”. |
First up is Ron. He’s angry about poachers coming down to the lake and attempting to attack Kingsie every night since the tournament. He assumes it’s because people are blaming Kingsie for the John Doe that had been found. Ben is upset as he really loves Kingsie, saying “Kingsie is a King Falls treasure!” (5:49). HFB3 derisively calls her a lake lizard living in a water puddle and says he doesn’t believe she exists. Apparently, Ron can make it from his lakehouse to the station at the top of the mountain in 22 minutes (6:05). Ben tells HFB3 that Kingsie is a fact, unlike most of the content in his ebook. After asking permission from Sammy to tear into it, he immediately can cite Chapter 2: Smokey and the Banshee, which describes an apparition driving a ghostly trans-am through town square every third Sunday, and Chapter 5: Bombing Range Road Rage, which says General Abilene goes out of his way to spook people on Old Bombing Range Road, as fictional. General Abilene is seen in Sweetzer Forest and lights/possible UFO activity can be seen on Old Bombing Range Road. Ben also says that there is an ancient burial ground underneath where HFB3’s family built their textile factory for cheap, contrary to what HFB3 writes in his ebook. Ben then asks point blank why no one sees him in the daytime. HFB3 gets defensive and claims he has an aversion towards the sun, tends to do his deals and business “in the nighttime hours”, and one might even call him “nocturnal”. |
Ben then says there is video of ghosts (yes, he does not use the word apparition) trying to scalp his employees and Sammy agrees, even admitting that he’s usually skeptical but that Ben showed him these videos. HFB3 says it’s graphics and special effects and he did not come on the show to be mocked. He calls them valley-dwellers and threatens to kick them out of town as he is close allies with the Mayor, to which Ben aggressively responds to “Bring it!” Sammy tries to defuse the conversation. Sammy says that some of the facts—presumably those provided to him by Ben, who Sammy calls “the stations foremost expert on King Falls History” (8:52)—and HFB3’s book “aren’t quite jiving”. HFB3 then threatens Sammy, saying, “This is my last warning: if you speak ill of myself or my family one more time, I will crush you. You’re livelihoods depend on this fact” (9:02). Ben retorts saying he’d never speak bad of his family because they “had the good sense to die before you turned into this joke, bringing down their hard-earned reputations” (9:12). HFB3 demands Ben is fired at once, says their show only has five listeners, and mocks the fact that Channel 13, which he calls a very respectable organization, rejected Ben three separate times. Sammy is now very uncomfortable and wants to wrap the interview up. Ben says no and he’s going to “phone a friend” first; this is, of course, Miss Emily Potter. HFB3 insults the library and Ben is quick to defend Emily. Emily says she has just finished reading his book and HFB3 seems to change his mind about her for the moment, saying, “Finally someone with good sense and better taste” (10:42). Ben asks Emily to talk about the history of the library, which is discussed in chapter 15 of King of King Falls, and describe any discrepancies. She mentions that he was incorrect regarding the construction of a secret apartment inside the library—it was not commissioned by Germany as a hiding place for Hitler as he believes, but instead was built along with the rest of the library in 1912, as proven by its inclusion in the original blueprints. Sammy finally cracks and calls him an old nutcase to get Ben to calm down, and HFB3 turns on Sammy as well. They threaten to call the sheriff’s department but HFB3 says that Gunderson is another close friend. He storms out. Sammy apologizes to Ben first for the disastrous interview and then teases him for blushing when Emily thanks him. Emily asks him out to Rose’s Diner. Sammy then laughs and it lightens up the entire universe. |
