The episode opens with a commercial from Randy McMullet from McMullet’s International Palace of Snakeskin Boots out on old Bombing Range Road. Sammy and Ben then introduce the show as covering the 55th Annual Bass Tournament down at Lake Hatchenhaw, the prize of which is a new bass boat and a $500 check. They have a guest on the show, Ron Begley, owner of Begley’s Bait and Tackle and sponsor of the Base s Tournament. Ron, in response to Ben’s eager prompting, mentions the fifth sighting that year of the Lake Hatchenaw Monster, Kingsie, out by the sunken pontoon boats. Ron also is apparently very sensitive to mentions of The Loch Ness Monster, who he is adamant is a “fake shitshow” in comparison to Kingsie. Ron also reacts very strongly to the possibility of gay jokes (Ben mentioning the word outing and Sammy thanking him for bringing color to the broadcast), saying “he’s the only soul in this town brave enough to own my identity, and I’m not gonna take any flack about it” (4:58), although he later claims he was teasing them. |
Mayor Grisham also comes on as a guest. He says that he’d love to listen to the show, but it’s too early, so he has his assistant Riley transcribe every show for him. Ben is thrilled by the praise. Grisham then asks how his mother is doing. He claims during the conversation that he doesn’t participate in the tournament due to being an “avid outdoorsman” (6:37). Sammy then starts to ask him about Tim Jensen’s disappearance, but Grisham sharply cuts him off and leaves before the scheduled end of his interview. Sammy is caught off guard and Ben is upset by the sudden, unexpected change in schedule, running off to find someone else to fill the time. That person ends up being Herschel F. Baumgardner, three-time winner of the tournament. He starts fairly cordial, but quickly becomes extremely aggressive, asking them if Cecil Sheffield put them up to it and insulting Ben for pulling him away from his boat before the tournament starts. |
They hear a scream and someone shouts that there’s a body in the lake. Sammy then takes off running to the scene. Ben wonders if it could be the missing Tim Jensen. Sammy attempts to question Mayor Grisham, but the show cuts out, ending the episode. In the last few seconds, it’s implied that the Mayor forcibly ended the show. |
